Merck Controversy:
Based in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, Merck & Co., Inc. is one of the world’s largest and most profitable pharmaceutical companies. Working to research and develop numerous pharmaceutical products, Merck has produced several vaccines that have seen widespread use since the mid-20th century. Merck developed the first mumps vaccine as well as the first rubella vaccine. Additionally, Merck scientists developed the first statin drugs, designed to combat high cholesterol, and Vioxx, designed to treat arthritis. Vioxx was later recalled for its tendency to increase heart attack risk. In 2006, the FDA approved Gardasil, an HPV vaccine produced by Merck. Gardasil has been surrounded by controversy since its release due to reported adverse effects. [1]
Why should I be concerned?
- Large corporations like Merck are highly-profitable. Activists have suggested that large pharmaceutical companies may place financial interests ahead of safety. [2]
- Merck scientists have been found engaging in immoral and dishonest scientific practices including fabrication of data. [3]
- In spite of achieving full FDA approval, Vioxx was later rejected due to its dangerous cardiovascular effects. Additionally, current research shows that managing cholesterol may not be the most important factor in preventing heart disease. [4]
- Statins, which also achieved full FDA approval, have been linked to diabetes and memory loss. [5]

- Dr. Bernard Dalbergue, a former Merck doctor, has admitted his belief that Gardasil is ineffective and dangerous. [6]
- Dr. Julie Gerberding, former CDC Director and current head of Merck’s vaccine division, has publicly admitted the link between vaccines and autism. [7]
