Rhogam at a glance:

According to RxList, “RhoGAM (rhod immune globulin human) is used to prevent an immune response to Rh positive blood in people with an Rh negative blood type. RhoGAM may also be used in the treatment of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). RhoGAM is a sterilized solution made from human blood. Rh is a substance that most people have in their blood (Rh positive) but some people don’t (Rh negative). An Rh negative person can be exposed to Rh positive blood through a mismatched blood transfusion or during pregnancy when the baby has the opposite blood type. This medication is available in generic form. Common side effects include discomfort at the site of injection, light fever or an allergic reaction to tiny amounts of proteins in the injection.”[1]

Why should I be concerned?

  • Rhogam is linked to allergies and allergic reactions due to proteins in the injection.
  • Rhogam contains mercury. Given during pregnancy, the mercury in Rhogam can cause negative effects.
